Your Assignment, Part I

For this assignment, you will be creating a career portfolio to help you get a job in the marketing career of your choice. But before you can jump right in to compiling the documents to include in your portfolio, you need to consider your interests, the relevant skills you already have, and the skills you need. This will allow you to create a plan to grow your skills in marketing.

Type your responses to the following questions using word processing software. Title the document "Career Plan." You will submit this to your teacher at the end of the assignment.

1. List three marketing careers that you find interesting.

2. Analyze your current skills that match up with the marketing careers you listed.

a) Create a table that shows two skills you have go with each career option, and two skills you would need to develop to succeed in each career option. Use the following table as a guide.Marketing Career

3. Choose one of the careers you listed. Create a plan that includes personal and career goals (long-term and short-term), objectives (building-block goals), and strategies to attain these goals and objectives. Check that you have written SMART goals. Consider any additional education or certificates you will need to earn. Be sure to include at least one way to gain real-world experience in a marketing environment. Also include at least one human relation skill (such as responsibility, teamwork, and so forth) that you would like to develop.

Your Assignment, Part II

In order to get hired for the marketing job you want, you need more than just the proper skills and requirements. You need an updated resume. You will create one now and add it to your career portfolio in Part III.

1. Research job openings for the career you selected in Part I, question 4 using a job search website. Record the job description for the position you like best at the end of your "Career Plan" document.

2. Before you can apply for this job, or any other job, create a resume using word processing software. Title this document "Resume." You will submit this as part of your career portfolio. • Be specific. The more realistic information your resume contains the better you will do on this assignment.

Your Assignment, Part III

Now that's you've written a resume, it's time to create your career portfolio.

Compile documentation that demonstrates your knowledge, skills, and experiences into a career portfolio. Documentation can include:

1. Resume
2. Pictures of you demonstrating a skill
3. Awards
4. Certifications and licenses
5. High school and college transcripts
6. Performance evaluations from previous jobs
7. Work samples
8. Letters of recommendation, letters of appreciation from clients or customers, etc.
9. Any other items that show your abilities and experiences

As you take more classes and gain more experience, remember that you will need to update your career portfolio.

You will submit your career portfolio to your teacher at the end of this assignment.

Your Assignment, Part IV

In your "Career Plan" document, answer the following questions, evaluating your plan.

1. How does the job description you found in Part II compare to your overall career goals? Could this job be a good fit for you in the future?

2. What are some of the benefits of professional development? How could you work this into your career plan in the future?

3. What entrepreneurship opportunities exist for you in this current career path?

4. Where might you need to adjust your personal and professional goals in your career plan as you continue to grow and change?

Tips for Success

Here are some tips to keep in mind as you answer your evaluation questions.

• Present your thoughts in a logical manner.
• Use specific examples as part of your analysis.
• Do a final edit, including checking spelling and grammar, before turning in your evaluation.
