First, List the salary you drew out of the cup and give 4 or 5 jobs you found that earn that type of salary Next, account for the payroll taxes that will be deducted from your salary/earnings. This https://smartasset.com/taxes/income-taxes is a great resource for that. You can take a screenshot after entering your information and use it as documentation of deductions. After you subtract the tax deductions from your yearly income from your annual income, divide by 12. This becomes your monthly spending budget. List that number and use it as a reference as you work through the categories of spending and saving for your budget. Insurance - you must have health insurance (and car insurance if you are in GA [you may account for car insurance in the transportation arca]) If there is any other insurance you would like and can afford, include it here. Housing - if you are buying a house, you need to figure out what your monthly mortgage will be. You will also need to account for your property taxes and hazard insurance. If you share housing, you may also share utilities, however, be aware the utilities will likely rise at least some from what a single person will pay. If you are renting (are utilities included), what will that cost you? You still are allowed to share, as long as there is at least one bedroom per renter (that is just being realistic). Utilities - whether you rent or own, you need to take care of your utilities. These include: Electricity Water Cell Phone - unless you plan on being homeless, pretty much everyone is obligated. If you make $25K or less, you may be able to qualify for a federal program for a free phone and potentially reduced service costs - check into this Internet - most of you will need this Transportation - If you do not live within two miles of where you work, YOU MUST have some form of transportation. You may finance a car with one of the pretty good deals out there or buy a used one. You must approximate your gasoline expenses and come up with an insurance figure - which should be related to your current cost (I'll let you reduce that by 5% since you'll be a few years older and theoretically safer. You may also choose to get to work, etc. through public transportation. Budget for this if it is a viable option based on where you live and work. Food - figure out what it costs you to cat in a week and a month. Account for grocery expenses as well as eating out. If you intend to drink adult beverages when you are 25, budget for those as well. They are really expensive. Entertainment - what will your leisure time cost you? Gym expenses? Budgeting for vacation? Playing video games? Netflix expenses? Concerts or Clubbing? Think about what an average month might look like and what it will cost you entertainment-wise. Television entertainment - most of you will also want some form of Dish/DirecTV/Cable, etc. You may use one of their low-ball deals, but please also read the fine print, and explain what will happen to next year's budget when the new prices kick in on a 2-year contract. Savings & Investment - Even though we saved this for last, most financial planners say this should be your first concern. You have future goals and aspirations when it comes to lifestyle (housing, fancy cars, vacations, etc.) that you should invest and save to meet. There should be no unaccounted for money, so all of your items/categories should add up to your monthly spendable income
