The data below are from an experiment done with white males. Two independent groups of college students who were known to excel in math and for whom doing well in math was important. Eleven subjects assigned to a control group completed a difficult math exam. Twelve subjects were assigned to the second group which was the threat condition. They were told that Asian students typically did better than other students in math tests and that the purpose of the experiment was to help the experimenter find out why this difference exists. The author reasoned that simply telling white students that Asians did better on math tests would arouse feelings of stereotype threat and diminish the student's performance.
