Identify the common organizational entities often included in the office of the director in a state correctional agency. 8. List the three key categories of functions within a prison, and how these are organized to carry out the prison mission. 9. Explain how unit management works, and the overall benefits to a correctional institution. 10. Describe the various functions in a community corrections organization, and the various levels of government that carry out these functions. INTRODUCTION What should now be apparent is that correctional administration has become very complex. The correctional mission has broadened in scope, and, therefore, the functions that must be performed by staff have increased and are much more intricate. First, the traditional boundar- ies of corrections have expanded. Historically, corrections began after sentencing. However. jails hold presentenced offenders. There are many community bail supervision and other diversion programs. Restorative justice is often the responsibility of correctional officials and includes the sentencing process. Prisoner reentry includes the integration of many community. criminal justice, and correctional activities. Even the long-established role of a prison is not the same as it was a few decades ago.
