9.31 Good movies. Statisticians enjoy movies as much as the next person. One statistician movie fan decided to use statistics to study the movie ratings in his favorite movie guide, Movie and Video Guide (1996), by Leonard Maltin. He was interested in discovering what features of Maltin's Guide might correlate to his view of the movie. Maltin rates movies on a onestar to fourstar system, in increments of halfstars, with higher numbers indicating a better movie. Our statistician has developed, over time, the intuition that movies rated 3 or higher are worth considering, but lower ratings can be ignored. He used a random number generator to select a simple random sample of 100 movies rated by the Guide. For each movie, he measured and recorded these variables: Title the movie's title Year the year the movie was released (range is 19241995) Time the running time of the movie in minutes (range is 45145) Cast the number of cast members listed in the guide (range is 313) Rating the movie's Maltin rating (range is 14, in increments of 0.5) Description the number of lines of text Maltin uses to describe the movie (range is 521) Origin the country where the movie was produced (I) 2 USA, 1 2 Great Britain, 2 = France, 3 = Italy, 4 = Canada) The data are in the le Film. For the purposes of his study, the statistician also dened a variable called Good?, where 1 = a rating of 3 stars or better and 0 2 any lower rating. He was curious about which variables might be good predictors of his personal denition of a good movie. Analyze the data to nd out. Write a short report of your ndings. (Note: Restrict your explanatory variables to Year, Time, Cast, and Description.)
