A 2 m long copper pipe is connected between 2 large vats. The pipe has an outer diameter of 10 cm and has wall thickness 6.35 mm. The pipe is connected when the temperature is 15C and tightening it into place creates a tension stress of 50 MPa. If we assume that the vats are rigidly in place, calculate the stress, strain and elongation in the pipe and the force the pipe exerts when the temperature of the pipe becomes 110C. The modulus of elasticity of copper is 130000 MPa with a coefficient of thermal expansion of 16.5x106/C.|
