A 27-year-old with a history of several episodes of major depressive disorder (MDD) has been receiving pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy for the past 3 years. He has not had a major depressive episode in the past 9 months and asks about discontinuing therapy. The PMHNP counsels that: 

A. Given the time since his last episode, the risk of relapse is very low. 

B. If there is no relapse during the first 2 months after discontinuation, a relapse is unlikely. 

C. Relapse is more likely among those with multiple MDD episodes. 

D. Pharmacotherapy should continue indefinitely.
