A 40 year old Hispanic woman is 5’4’’ and 176 pounds. She is a single working mom who has two teenage children who are at the 90th percentile for BMI. She has struggled with her weight since the birth of her children and has continually gained weight over the past decade. She has tried various diets and lost weight temporarily, but always gains back what she lost and more. She has a desk job and is relatively sedentary with little opportunity to be physically active. Recently, she has developed some health problems such as elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure. She is concerned about developing diabetes because her mother and father are diabetic. She reports she has little time to cook and prepare meals at home, so her family eats out for most meals. Using the Miflin St. Jeor equation her TEE is estimated at 1750 kcal per day to maintain her weight.

Questions:

  1. What is her BMI? What weight category does that place her in?
  2. How much weight would she need to lose to be a in a normal weight BMI category?
  3. How much weight do you suggest she lose to reduce her risk for developing chronic disease? In what time period should she lose this weight?
  4. Why was the Milflin St. Jeor equation used instead of the EER?
