A binary mixture (A+B) is to be purified by continuous distillation in a column consisting of N trays, a partial reboiler and total condenser. The feed composition is 55 mol% A and 45 mol% B and the feed flowrate (F) is 100 kmol/h. The feed is mixture of saturated vapor and liquid: q=0.3. The liquid distillate is 90 mol% A and the liquid bottoms is 95 mol% B. The distillate (and reflux) is subcooled: qR=1.1 and the vapor fed from the reboiler to the column is superheated: qB=-0.05. The external reflux ratio (R0) is 1.2. Compute the total flowrates of the following streams:

a. Distillate (D)

b. Bottoms (B)

c. Reflux fed to the column (L0). (Note that this is distinct from the Reflux ratio)

d. Vapor leaving the 1st (top) tray of the column (V1)

e. Liquid (L) and vapor (V) in the rectifying section

f. Liquid () and vapor () in the stripping section

g. Vapor from the re-boiler fed to the column ( 0)

h. Liquid leaving the Nth tray of the column ()

Also compute the internal reflux ratio (R) and the external and internal boilup ratios (VB0 and VB)

Draw a sketch of the system, label the streams and specify their flowrates. (Make sure the sketch is large enough such that the stream labels and the flowrates are legible)

Round off intermediate values in calculations to two decimal places and use the rounded values for succeeding calculations.
