A cohort study was conducted to determine if energy drink consumption immediately prior to an exam was associated with a higher exam score. One thousand college students on a campus were followed for 4 years regarding energy drink consumption and exam scores. At the end of the study, it was determined if students who regularly consumed an energy drink immediately prior to taking exams had higher test scores than students who did not consume energy drinks immediately prior to taking exams. Of the 1000 students,750 remained at the end of the study. Of those remaining, 150 had above average test scores, and 600 had test scores that were average or below. Among the 150 with above average test scores, 25 reported always or usually consuming an energy drink immediately before taking any exam. Among the 600 with average or below test scores, 300 reported consuming an energy drink immediately before taking any exam.
