A company has to deliver 30,000 products in the next four weeks. The customer is willing to pay 23TL, 21TL, 19TL and 17TL for each product if delivered by the end of Week1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4, respectively. A worker can finish only 45 products in a week. Hence, the available full- time personnel of 40 is not enough to meet the demand, and part-time help must be hired and trained. Experienced personnel can be used to instruct a class of two trainees; after one week of training, trainees (now experienced) can either proceed to the assembly line or instruct new trainees. Instructors do not contribute to production while instructing. All of the workers, whether permanent or temporary, must be kept on the payroll until the end of the fourth week even if they become idle. The weekly wages of experienced workers are 800TL; the weekly wages of a trainee are 250TL. The production costs, not including wages, are 5TL/product. Formulate an LP problem to maximize the total net profit. Hint: You have three types of workers: workers actually doing assembly during any given week, workers instructing trainees, and idle workers. The number of trained workers in the next week is twice as much as the number of instructors of a given week. This is a multi-period production planning model
