A compound was insoluble in water, $5\%$ sodium hydroxide solution, and $5\%$ hydrochloric acid solution but soluble in $96\%$ sulfuric acid solution. It did not react with $2,4-$dinitrophenylhydrazine, acetyl chloride, or potassium thiocyanate. It reacted with bromine and potassium permanganate.
