A gas tungsten arc-welding operation is performed on a Mild Steel having a melting temperature of
1500C. A filler metal wire having a diameter of 3mm is used to obtain a final weld bead composed of
a percentage in volume of filler equivalent to 0.6, the remaining volume being base metal. When the
voltage is set at 27V, the current in the operation is 145A, and the welding speed is 5.5mms. Consider
the usual loss from the heat transport factor to be 0.70 for TIG, and the melting factor to be 0.90.
Determine:
The power input of the process P, and the rate of heat generation at the weld Hw;
The power density PD, knowing that the power is transferred within a circle of diameter
10mm with an efficiency of 0.70.
The volume rate of metal welded V and the CSA of the weld bead Aw.
The feed rate vr at which the filler must be supplied.
