A job campaign consists of many tasks: finding potential employers, reviewing job openings, writing a cover letter and resume, interviewing, receiving rejections, negotiating job offers, and making decisions. The best place to start is with a goal or a career objective. It may be helpful to ask, “What do I want to do?” and “Where do I want to be?” Hence, the goal of this assessment is to identify and craft your career (or professional) objectives.
Requirements
- Research career (not resume) objectives and create two objectives: one long-term objective and one short-term objective (you decide what constitutes long and short for you). They should:
- Match your strengths and personal goals, but still be focused on yourself as a professional.
- Identify how your skills relate to your professional goals.
- Focus on your future career aspirations.
For these objectives, remember that they are best written as action statements and not full sentences with lots of description. The key is to get at the heart of what you want to accomplish and how you will accomplish it. Note that these are not the same as resume objectives. See the Additional Resources folder in the Content section of the course for format explanation and report exemplar.
- Write a report (not an essay) that includes:
- An introduction that briefly explains your career field of interest and the possible position title you are seeking (e.g., accountant), plus the report objective/purpose statement.
- A discussion section that includes:
- your two career objectives (one long-term and one short-term)
- a specific plan of how you will achieve these objectives and how you will measure your progress toward achieving your goals
- the timeline required
- Report style language focused on the facts you are presenting.
- Headings to separate report sections.
