A liquid mixture leaving a hydroformylation reactor contains 50.0 wt %
nonanaldehyde (A),10.0 wt % of 1-octene (B), and balance toluene (T). A stream of this reaction
mixture is continuously fed into a distillation column operating at steady state. Product streams
leave the top and the bottom of the distillation column. The column design calls for the following:
(I) The mass flowrate of the top stream (vapor) is twice that of the bottom stream
(liquid).
(II) The top stream (vapor) contains 10.0wt%A and 70.0wt%B.
a.(13 pts) Draw and completely label a flowchart of this process (you do not need to
include the reactor in your flowchart). Use complete units and standard nomenclature,
show all variables on the flowchart, and write the given information in terms of relevant
variables beside the flowchart. Note: Flowrates are in units of kgs.
b.(7 pts) Do the degree-of-freedom (DOF) analysis on the labeled flowchart from part (a).
Specify the unknown variables and type of equations used when doing DOF analysis. DO
NOT write the complete equations.
c.(2 pts) Based on the DOF analysis of part (b), can the requested variables be calculated?
If No, what information would need to be provided (or assumed) to be able to solve for
the requested variables?
d.(9 pts) Assuming an input feed rate of 100kgs, write the equations you would solve to
calculate unknown process variables. DO NOT perform any calculations.
e.(4 pts) Using the labeled flowchart in part (a) and an input feed rate of 100kgs, write an
expression for the ratio of A in the bottom stream (liquid) leaving the distillation column
to the amount of A in the input feed stream. DO NOT perform any calculations.
