A local zoo wanted to determine if the presence of people at the pen of their Great Pyrenees Dog was causing greater stress to the animal compared to no people present. The researchers decided they would use the dog's activity level as a measurement of stress (more activity means more stress). A random sample of dogs who had people present were observed and another sample of dogs who didn't have people present were observed.
