A mixture of 60 mol% A and 40 mol% B is combined with a recycled stream of pure
C. The combined stream enters a separation process along with a recycle stream containing the
same components (35 wt% A,20 wt% B, and 45 wt% C). Two streams leave this process at 25\deg C;
the product stream containing 100 lbm/hr A, and a stream containing all three components (30
wt% A,14 wt% B, and 56 wt% C). This stream enters a second separation unit that recovers a
pure C stream, a pure B stream, and the recycle stream that enters the first separation unit. The
C stream is heated and recycled to combine with the A/B feed stream. We want to determine the flow rate and composition of each stream.
a.(10 points) Draw and label a flow diagram.
b.(15 points) Complete a degree of freedom analysis around the entire process and each unit/mixing
point/splitting point. Note what all of the equations and unknowns are.
c.(20 points) List the order in which you would solve the equations; note which unknown(s) you would solve for in each step (do not complete any calculations).
d.(5 points) What additional information is needed to complete the calculations?
LABEL ALL COMPONENTS AND VARIABLES IN THE DIAGRAM and also write/explain equations and unknowns
