A new treatment for anxiety was expected to lower scores on the state trait anxiety inventory which would represent an improvement in anxiety (as anxiety decreases, scores decrease). The researcher chose to conduct a ONE-TAILED test.

Thirty-four participants had their anxiety levels measured using the inventory before the treatment and all 34 were again measured after the treatment ended. The results indicated that the treatment did NOT lower inventory scores significantly. The mean inventory score before treatment was 14 and the mean inventory score after treatment was 15.6. The obtained value of t was 1.1418, and alpha was set at .05.
