A new winery has just started up in the Bay Area town of Moraga. One of their wines that they have decided to barrel age is a Syrah. They have a small barrel room that will fit 40 barrels in a single level.
(a) In looking at the chemical data of the Syrah barrels from 6 months apart, they notice that the ethanol level has gone up slightly over time from 13.0% to 13.2%. They know that their fermentations were complete before placing the wine in barrel. You decide that this increase in ethanol could be due to the humidity setting in their barrel room. With your knowledge of humidity control and wine ethanol levels, what would you guess is the relative humidity in the barrel room? Explain.
(b) In August, the average daytime temperature in Moraga is 72F and the average relative humidity is 60%. What is coolest that we can make this barrel room by just misting water, if we also want to avoid excessive mold growth on the barrel surfaces? Show your work on the attached psychrometric chart.
(c) If instead, we decide to reach the same final humidity level as in (b) but using only cooling (without addition of water), what would the final temperature be? Show your work on the attached psychrometric chart.
(d) How much energy will be needed to bring the average August outside air to these final conditions (from part (c))?
