A numerical line differential relay provides segregated three-phase current differential protection on a 50 Hz system. Each phase current input is sampled every 2.5 ms and is converted to a complex numerical quantity using discrete Fourier Transform filters, each producing a real and an imaginary component. Every filter output is represented by a 16-bit binary number. To facilitate the calculation of differential and bias currents, all three phase current quantities are transmitted between line ends in telegram packages together with required timing, control, and status information. The timing, control, and status information imposes an additional 40%(approximate) burden on the telegram payload. The telegram is transmitted using a byte-orientated communications protocol (meaning that the telegram must be composed of a whole number of bytes). To assure correct data routing and security, an additional six bytes are added to the telegram payload. 64kbps digital channels are available to transmit data between line ends. Assuming the transmission of a telegram must start only at a sampling instant, and that the differential calculation can only be performed upon receipt of a new telegram, determine how many times per power system cycle the telegrams can be sent, and consequently how often the differential algorithm can be executed at a receiving terminal. You should clearly demonstrate how you determine your answer.
