A pharmaceutical company is investigating the efficacy of a newdrug designed to lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients.In a randomized controlled trial, 50 patients were randomly assigned to either the treatment group receiving the new drug or the control group receiving a placebo. After 8 weeks of treatment, the systolic blood pressure was measured for each patient. The mean systolic blood pressure in the treatment group was found to be 125 mmHg with a standard deviation of 10 mmHg, while in the control group, the mean systolic blood pressure was 135 mmHg with a standard deviation of 12 mmHg.
