A flue gas containing CO2 and several other species (collectively designated as A) enters the bottom of the absorption column. The flue gas fed to the column at 4 kmol/min contains 20 mole% of CO2. An MEA solvent is fed at the top of the column and contacted counter-currently with the flue gas in which CO2 is highly soluble
and adsorbed by the solvent. The MEA solvent feed rate to the column is 32 kmol/min. As the
CO2 is absorbed into the MEA solvent, emerges together with the solvent at the bottom column
of the absorber as CO2-rich stream. Meanwhile, the cleaned flue gas leaves the top of the
absorber column as a vent gas. 2% of CO2 entering the absorption column is removed at the
top of column. Draw the flow chart and perform the degree-of-freedom (DOF) analysis for the
system. Determine the flow rates and the compositions of the outlet streams (cleaned gas and
the CO2-rich stream).
