A piston-cylinder device contains 8kg of water at 120C with a quality of 65 percent,
the temperature of the surroundings remains constant at 200C. This water undergoes
two processes as follows:
State 1 to state 2: Heat is transferred to the steam in a constant pressure process until
all of the water is just vaporized. During this process, the temperature is kept constant.
State 2 to state 3: The water undergoes an adiabatic, reversible process (i.e. not at
constant pressure) until the pressure is 10kPa.
(a) Sketch these processes with respect to the saturation lines on a single T-s diagram.
(b) Determine the heat transferred to the steam in the first process (Q12), in kJ.
(c) Determine the work done by the steam in the second process, (W23) in kJ.
(d) Determine the total entropy generated during the complete process from state 1 to
state 3, in kJK.
