A plasticizer called dibutyl phthalate (DBP) has a 12 million lb/yr market potential and is to be produced by the reaction of n-butanol with monobutyl phthalate (MBP). The reaction is catalysed sulphuric acid and follows elementary rate law. A stream containing butanol and MBP is to be mixed with H2SO4 catalyst immediately before the stream enters the reactor. The incoming stream has MBP concentration of 0,2lbmol/ft3 and the molar feed rate of butanol is 5 times that of MBP. The specific reaction rate at 100F is 1,2ft3/lb mol.hr. There is a 1000 gallon CSRT and other associated peripheral equipment available for use on this project for 30 days a year (operation 24hr/day ). a) Determine the exit conversion in the available 1000 gal reactor if you were to produce 33% of the share of the predicted market. [10] b) How might you increase the conversion for the same FAO ? For example, what conversion would be achieved if a second 1 000-gal CSTR were placed either in series or in parallel with the first CSTR? [25] c) If the molar feed rate of MBP is 1lbmol/min, what CSTR volume would be necessary to achieve the conversion of 85% ? [5] d) If possible, calculate the PFR volume necessary to achieve 85% conversion. [5]
