Based on her initial tests, it was determined by her physician, Brian Matthews, MD, that she needed to have an emergency cholecystectomy. Dr. Matthews performed the surgery on April 15, 2016 at 8:30 pm. During the course of the surgery, Ms. O'Brien lost a considerable amount of blood. It was determined by Dr. Matthews that Ms. O'Brien needed a blood transfusion. Dr. Matthews ordered two units of packed red cells which Ms. O'Brien received. Ms. O'Brien survives and so do the twins.
