A process engineer is designing a pilot scale filtration unit for water treatment. He needs to calculate the membrane area required to filter 10L/min water. The plan is to use UF membranes. Membrane physical characteristics are provided by the manufacture as follows: Thickness: 0.13 mm (0.005 inch) Porosity: 0.75 Pore size: 0.1 micrometer 90% recovery Operating pressure is specified as 50 psi (3.4 e5 N/m2) for this system. Assume an operating temperature of 25 C (77F). 1. Estimate the expected permeate flux under these conditions. 2. Based on the expected permeate flux, what would be the membrane active area required for this pilot unit
