A recent biography of Ginsberg, (Screaming of Joy: The Life of Allen Ginsberg. Bloomsbury P, 1999), examines how "Howl" is perceived in contemporary America. I was surprised to find that it is still not possible to broadcast readings of "Howl" on TV during daytime, as it is still viewed as being obscene. Obviously, opinions differ when it comes to views on censorship, but considering what is currently allowed on TV and also considering the poem's importance today in American literature, is it reasonable to view "Howl" as X-rated material or should we allow it to be read on TV?
