A recently widowed stay at home mother of two children learns that she has to pay her yearly property tax bill of $5000 or the government will come and seize her home. The mother has never worked and discovers the only work she can obtain is minimum wage work that nets her less than the cost of putting her two kids in daycare. The mother decides she will stay in her home as long as she can until forced out of her home. Six months after failing to pay her property tax, the government places a lien on her home and forced the sale of the house. Because the government's action requires a judge to approve, the mother is given the opportunity to go in front of the Judge to argue why she should stay in her home. She argues that although she does not produce any economic value that can be measured in money she provides substantial social value by devoting herself to raising her two children to become productive members of society. The Judge tells her that while he understands her situation, the law does not place any value on the social value she is creating, only the direct economic value measured in money, and therefore the government can and must evict the mother from her home.
