A reverse osmosis (RO) system, as shown in Figure Q2, is used for desalination of saline water to produce drinking water. The feedwater contains total dissolved solid (TDS) of 2.000mgL and boron of 10mgL. The feed to the RO system has a flowrate of 800m3d. Stage 1 has recovery of 50%, Stage 2 has recovery of 40% and Stage 3 has recovery of 90%. Assime the concentration polarization factor is 1.2 in all stages. All the RO membranes used in the system have intrinsic rejection of 99% for TDS and 75% for boron. The semperature is at 25C. Determine the flowrates and TDS contents of feed,retentate and permeate in each stage of RO system. Determine the recovery and rejection of TDS of the RO system.
