A salt tracer is injected at flow rate of 0.05 cm/s into capillary tube that is 0.2 cm long. The dispersion coefficient in the tube in 0.001 cm2 /s.

a) Use Excel to calculate the numerical solution for the concentration profile along the length of the column 1 second after injection of a 0.5 second pulse of salt solution with a concentration of Co.

b) Calculate the concentration profile after 1 second elapsed for a continuous step input of concentration Co.

c) Calculate the effluent concentration as a function of time for a continuous step input of concentration Co.

d) Use Figure 2.3 from Crank (extended source of infinite extent) to calculate the dispersion coefficient from the effluent profile calculated in part c.

e) Integrate your concentration profile for part a to determine the mass balance error.
