A shallow pad foundation is to be designed to provide fixed support to the base of a column. The ground conditions at the site comprise a deep deposit of heavily overconsolidated boulder clay extending down from the ground surface. The water table is estimated to be 3m below ground level. The following characteristic soil parameters are assumed for the boulder clay: bulk unit weight y=21 kN/m, both above and below the water table; undrained shear strength c = 200 kN/m; angle of shear strength 6' = 35; coefficient of volume compressibility my = 0.02 m/MN. The characteristic loads at foundation level are estimated to be as follows: Dead Loads: Imposed Loads: a vertical load of 2000 kN. a vertical load of 3000 kN, a horizontal load of 400 kN, a moment of 1600 kNm. The moment and horizontal load act in the same vertical plane. The partial factors on dead and imposed loads are 1.35 and 1.5, respectively, for ULS calculations. The partial factors on soil parameters for ULS calculations are 1.4 on Cu, 1.25 on tano' and 1.0 on other soil parameters. All partial factors are 1.0 for SLS calculations. A 4 m by 4 m pad foundation at a formation level of 2 m below the ground surface is under consideration. (c) Calculate the design vertical and horizontal loads in kN and the design moment in kNm on the pad. [2 Marks] (d) Calculate the design vertical resistance in kN of the pad for short-term loading conditions. [4 Marks] (e) Calculate the design vertical resistance in kN of the pad for long-term loading conditions. [8 Marks] (f) Comment on the adequacy of the proposed design. [3.3 Marks]
