A shipping company is planning a management development conference, and they have to choose a hotel that will be used as the conference venue. The conference organisers began with an initial list of 20 possible hotels, which they reduced to a shortlist of five: the Altmere, the Buttersley, the Castleton, the Doncaster, and the Ely. The organisers used a value tree to identify the attributes relating to their decision. These are: 1. the cost of using the hotel, 2. ease of transport to the hotel, 3. quality of the conference facilities, 4. comfort of the bedrooms, and 5. quality of other facilities. Part A The scores that the conference organisers assigned to each hotel for their non-monetary attributes, i.e. all attributes except cost, are given below. A score of 0 indicates the worst performance on the attribute and a score of 100 indicates the best performance on the attribute. The cost of each hotel (a monetary attribute) is also given below. The organisers considered a hypothetical hotel that had the lowest scores on all the non-monetary attributes. Then, the organisers imagined that each of the hypothetical hotel's attributes could be switched to its best possible value (while all other attribute scores remained at 0 ), and then ranked and weighted the attractiveness of the possible attribute switches. The results are given below. One of the conference organisers is concerned that 'ease of transport to the hotel' was acknowledged as being the most important attribute; however, it does not have the largest weight. Explain why the attribute weights might still be valid. [Question 1, Part A: 3 marks] SMART has been used to obtain aggregate scores for the non-monetary attributes and the results are given below. Show how the score for each hotel was obtained. [Question 1, Part B: 10 marks] Part C Which hotels lie on the efficient frontier when costs are brought into consideration? [Question 1, Part C: 2 marks] Part D The conference organisers would be willing to pay $6000 if a hotel's conference facilities could be upgraded from those equivalent to the worst to those equivalent to the best, all else remaining equal. Determine which hotel on the efficient frontier they should choose
