A significant role in being a nurse leader is to serve as a role model to your team members (Morganelli,2021). My interview was conducted with a director that I have worked with for the past 5 years. She has been a nurse a little over 9 years and has worked in areas like intensive care, nursing informatics and education. She recently graduated from Columbus State with her BSN and most recently started her degree for MBA. Before becoming the Director of Education this past year, she spent the last 3 years coordinating the Nurse Residency Program. She was one of two people to help bring the program to the hospital and make it what it is today. She has brought a lot of insight and knowledge into current role.

She would describe her leadership style as participative. She strives on incorporating everyone from her team, this includes members like HealthStream Coordinator to Nurse Educators that she manages. She holds weekly meetings to update her staff on things changing in the department and encourages her staff for their opinions. She involves her team in meetings, new onboarding processes and education requirements for the hospital staff. Disadvantages to participative leadership style is setting priorities and delegate tasks (Beauvais, 2018). She goes on to say that she doesn't see this as a disadvantage because roles are set, and everyone is clear on what they are supposed to be doing. In a way, this puts her at ease.

When asked what challenges she has faced so far as being a director, she laughs and tells me "Communication". She has had to learn to adapt to different communication styles and different personalities. She oversees education for the entire hospital, which includes 1400 employees and having an open communication is vital in her role. She has had to overcome people ignoring her and not complying with education standards for the hospital. To fix these problems, she has found solutions to accommodate the staff and their compliance.

She was asked, as a leader, what do you value the most when things are going well? She depends on the team she has, and teamwork goes a long way. When you have a group who you can value, respect, and rely on then everything seems to work smoothly.
