A special purpose drilling and tapping machine, which is used to make a range of terminal blocks in your auto shop, operate as follows:
Two shifts working, 6 hours per shift, 5 days per week 35 minutes break per shift 10 minutes planned autonomous maintenance exercise at the beginning of the shift Planned throughput is 100 units per hour Actual good output is 4750 units per week The following is a list of losses encountered during the machining process: 1. The circular saw blade that cuts off the material shatters and has to be replaced. This happens once per week and takes 40 minutes. 2. Cutting fluid is sprayed onto the bar feeder causing the bar to slip and not feed properly with two consequences; a) if a part feed occurs then the block is cut off too short. This happens three times per day, takes 10 minutes to clear and 10 pieces are lost. b) if the bar does not feed then the machine stops, has to be cleared and reset. This happens twice per week and takes 50 minutes each time. 3. On the second tapping, head the tap breaks and is undetected meaning that parts have to be tapped out by hand. This happens once every day, 20 parts have to be reworked, 30 parts are scrapped and it takes 25 minutes to replace the tap 4. the operator has to wait for the compressor air pressure to build up at the start of each shift. This takes 15 minutes each day Based on the information provided above, calculate: a) Availability rate [7 Marks] b) Performance rate [7 Marks] c) Quality rate [5 Marks] d) Overall Equipment Efficiency [6 Marks] Total [25 Marks]
