A study in the Academy of Management Journal investigated how rude behaviors influence a persons work performance. University students enrolled in a management course were randomly assigned to one of two groups, one group subjected to a normal scenario, the other group being exposed to a rude scenario.

Students were required to show up one time to a $1$:$00$pm session during which the facilitator of the experiment asked each student to write down as many uses of a brick as possible in five$-$minutes, as a performance metric. A participant in the experiment, posing as a student, entered the session $1-$minute late. In the normal setting, the facilitator said nothing about the late$-$comer. However, in the rude setting, the facilitator berated the entire group of students that they were irresponsible and unprofessional, because of the lateness of one student.
