A study was conducted in New York City to see what some of the risk factors for homelessness were, given that people were poor, and did not have any serious mental illness. Only poor people without serious mental illnesses were included in the study. In this study 200 people who had recently become homeless (100 men and 100 women) were compared to 200 other poor people of the same sex and age who also lived in New York City, but had never been homeless. A great deal of information on potential risk factors was collected from the two groups. Some of it is shown in the 2 by 2 tables below.
| Homeless | Never Homeless | Total |
Income from family | 17 | 57 | 74 |
No Income from family | 83 | 43 | 126 |
Total | 100 | 100 | 200 |
| Homeless | Never Homeless | Total |
Income from family | 26 | 54 | 80 |
No Income from family | 74 | 46 | 120 |
Total | 100 | 100 | 200 |
