To calculate the relative risk for the relationship between NSAID use and GI bleeding for men, we use the formula: RRmen=Riskno,menRiskyes,men, where Risk_yes is the risk associated for bleeding with NSAID use, and the Risk_no is the risk of GI bleeding associated with no NSAID use. Risk_yes,men = [11/(11+34)] = 0.24, while Risk_no,men = [11/(11+50)]=0.18. Hence, the ratio of these two values, ie 0.24/0.18 = 1.36. In this study, men who used NSAID had 1.4 times the risk of GI bleeding compared to men who did not use NSAID.
