A U-tube manometer consists of two tubes A and B, with vertical axes and uniform cross-sectional areas 500 mm2 and 800 mm2 respectively, connected to a U-tube C of cross-sectional area 300 mm2 throughout. Tubes A and B are connected to two separate cylinders, each having a volume of 6 m3, storing compressed air at 30 C. Tube A contains a liquid of relative density 0.8; tube B contains one of relative density 0.9. The surface of separation between the two liquids is in the vertical side of C connected to tube A. This surface of separation is 0.8 m below the liquid level in tube A and 0.6 m below that of tube B. (1) Assuming that the pressure head in the tank connected to tube B is equal to 22 metres of water, calculate the air pressure in the other tank. (8 marks) (ii) Calculate the rise in the surface of separation in tube C when the pressure in the tank B rises by 2 percent assuming that the pressure and temperature in tank A remain unchanged.
