A wealthy philanthropist has decided to set up an endowment fund for entering college freshmen who have declared that they intend to either go into industry, research, or public service after they complete their formal education. This individual has not ever done anything like this before and is looking at ways to develop selection criterion to use to narrow down the applicant pool. The university where the endowment will be set up administers aptitude tests to all incoming students in English, reading, spatial reasoning, abstract reasoning, mathematics, and clerical skills. The philanthropist has been provided with a set of scores for 169 of the incoming students for the next term. This person believes that a student's score on the English aptitude test would be a good place to start in evaluating potential applicants and is interested to see if the declared career choice and/or the applicants gender have any relationship to the score on the aptitude test.
