A well dressed, middle-aged man is ushered into your office. He has been referred by the courts for an assessment. His behavior is relaxed and he sits in a chair without fidgeting. Some background information has been supplied to you, and you question him about some of it. He states, yes, he has been married twice and has three children, only one from his marriages, the other two out of wedlock. No, he has never felt that he had a responsibility to support these children. He was sure their mothers were quite capable of doing so, and had simply "used" him to become pregnant. He had been caught selling phony life insurance to elderly clients - the reason for his referral - and was now out on bail. He advises you that he had been providing a service to his elderly customers, by reassuring them that their families would be taken care of after their deaths, and they certainly wouldn't know any better after they were dead. Because of his situation he could offer them "very adequate" insurance amounts at a rate they could easily afford. His history shows that he has been in contact with the court since his early teenage years, when he was caught receiving stolen goods and for truancy. He has since been in jail several times, once for failure to provide child support, several times for scams, and once for tax evasion.
