Question:
A) You have a theory that the percentage grade students hope to earn in SOCY 211. It will differ depending on whether or not students are more likely to binge drink while participating in social events. You will need to eventually test for normality of the ratio variable ('SOCY211') and you will need to transform this variable using natural log for comparison. Natural log cannot be computed on cases with an attribute of zero, but SPSS allows users to restrict cases based on whether a particular condition is satisfied (eg. Percent grade one hopes to earn in SOCY211 us greater than zero). In preparation for later operations open the OnQ Student Survey in SPPSS and select 'Data' (you will find this to the left of 'Transform') and from the drop-down menu select 'Select Cases.' Check 'If condition is satisfied' and select the 'If' button. Once in the compute window move 'SOCY211' into the operations field using the arrow. Using the calculator pad select the 'greater than' sign and '0'. Your operations should look like this: SOCY211 > 0. Select 'Continue' and then 'OK.' Now if you look in Data View you will see that only those cases where students responded with a value greater than zero will be included in future analyses. Provide screen captures of this process to show your work. 2
