Q2. The cell membrane is made up of a thin layer called the "phospholipid bilayer". It has two layers of phospholipid molecules with phosphate heads on the surfaces and lipid (oil) tails on the inside. The outside heads mix with water, but the tails reject water. The hydrocarbon chains of the phospholipid are electrical insulator material and their resistivity could be 1013 32.cm?~ 1014 02.cm. Since there are charges accumulated on both the two sides of the cell membrane, the cell membrane can be considered as a spherical capacitor. Assume that the two spherical shells of the capacitor have radii a - 90 nm and b - 100 nm, the interior is dielectric for which Er = 3.0. (a) Calculate the capacitance C; (6 marks) (b) If the membrane potential is 70 mV, calculate the energy stored in the cell membrane. (6 marks)
