ABC Ltd is a multinational enterprise in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2020, ABC faced a challenging ethical dilemma. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many physicians and doctors serving Covid-19 patients order one type of drug from ABC. The demand is huge and increasing. In fact, this drug has been effectively used to treat patients having one type of cancer. If the company decides to sell the drugs to doctors in the frontline of Covid-19, there will not be enough medicine for cancer patients. With thousands of new orders coming in, the top management in company ABC is under huge pressure to respond immediately. Before making the critical decision, the company did some investigations. First, experts in the company find that there is a lack of sufficient and reliable evidence demonstrating that this drug can effectively cure Covid-19 patients. Even if the drug can cure Covid-19 patients according to some available data, the dose that should be provided to the patients may exceed accepted safety criteria. Second, it would take many months for ABC to manufacture more drugs.
