According to Department of Labor, the mandatory retirement age for air traffic controllers is 56 years of age, with the occasional exception of up to 61 years of age. Based on what you have learned about fluid and crystallized intelligence as a function of age, Sternberg's three types (analytical, practical, and creative) of intelligence, Schaie's (2005) longitudinal research on adult cognition, the ability of adult knowledge and expertise to compensate for brain slowdown, and information from the video on adult cognition in middle age, devise and argument for increasing the minimum retirement age for controllers. Take care not to allow ageist stereotypes to influence your views and conclusions. Keep in mind that there were many retirements of controllers during the pandemic leading to "brain drain", which is possibly a major cause of the significant increase near miss accidents. If it should be increased, what age should it be?
