According to White & amp; Chermak (2022), France began colonizing countries throughout the world in 1830, including Algeria. As such, they used military force to conquer governments and the civilian population. By 1952, the French government decided to end its colonial efforts and left many countries, except Algeria (pp.174-177). Describe the nationalistic revolutionary strategies of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and discuss how their efforts may have contributed to independence of Algeria. Review the list on p.177 comparing French efforts in Algeria to the American experience in Iraq. Do you believe the list offers a good comparison or not? Explain. Note: Consider conducting an Internet search of the Iraq campaign to make a comparison.

Historically, the United States government has had a role in combating terrorism in the Middle East, either using unconventional methods, such as involving the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), funding and supplying opposing groups, or temporarily occupying a country with conventional military troops. Moreover, there has been significant support for Israel and cooperation between the Israeli government and the United States. Why is the United States government so interested in what happens in the Middle East? How has the United States supported Israel in combatting terrorism in the Middle East and elsewhere? What are the major organizations accused of carrying out acts of terrorism against the Israeli government? Explain why they are opposed to the occupation.

Identify one of the groups discussed in the text or in the Counterterrorism Guide, then discuss their involvement in terrorism. Include their efforts, beliefs, and philosophy or religion. Be sure to note how major organizations, such as al Qaeda, ISIS, FARC, and the ELN, among others, have influenced splinter organizations or the local population. You can also use outside research but be sure to support your statements with citations and references.

Identify one of the militant scholars and strategists noted on pp.287-290 of the text. Discuss how they have influenced terrorist organizations and their followers historically and in modern times. Discuss their theories and include your thoughts on why they have such a large following. Do you believe their work has encouraged terrorists to carry out attacks in their home country or the United States? If so, why? Have they encouraged revolutionary and counterrevolutionary actions? Explain. Discussion 6:1: Using the text and resources provided, identify an act of domestic terrorism that has occurred in the United States within the last 20 years. Discuss the individual or group responsible for the act briefly noting their background and ideologies. Include details such as association with other individuals or groups, dates, and what occurred. Based upon your reading, is there evidence the government could have prevented the act? Be sure to support your position with citations and references

After reading the text and viewing the Domestic Terrorism video, discuss why the United States government does not currently have a domestic terrorism law. Answer the following questions: Do we need a domestic terrorism law in the United States? Does the United States government designate domestic terrorist organizations? Why or why not? Should they? What are some of the laws the government uses to arrest and prosecute domestic terrorism suspects?

The Text and viewing of the two videos noted in the viewing assignment, discuss the various state, local, and federal agencies that are responsible for homeland security in the United States. Do you believe that a large number of agencies responsible for homeland security leads to confusion and unnecessary bureaucracy? Does the number of local law enforcement agencies in the United States reduce efforts to protect the homeland? If so, why?

Using the text, Fusion Center video, and the NBC News report on Fusion Centers, answer the following: How important are Fusion Centers in protecting the homeland against acts of domestic or international terrorism? Do you believe they have been effective in stopping another act of terrorism since being established? If so, please include examples using the text, video, or NBC News report. If you have expertise in the field, feel free to share your experience. If not, share your opinion on why you believe they have not been effective. Based on your work or the reading, do you feel Fusion Centers go far enough to ensure information and intelligence is shared with personnel in the field? If not, how can this be changed? Is this an issue with the Fusion Center or your department or agency administration?
