Peter has many relatives who have suffered from colon cancer. During a medical check-up, a a small stalked polyp was discovered in the colon, which was removed. The pathological- anatomical diagnosis (PAD) showed that it was an adenoma. During a later check-up, when Peter was 43 years old, a new tumour was found in the descending colon, which was surgically removed. PAD revealed the tumour to be a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (PT3N1). The cancer had grown through the muscle layers of the bowel, and two mesenteric lymph nodes were found positive for the tumour. Peter consequently received treatment with the cytostatic chemotherapeutic agents, 5- fluoruracil and oxiplatin, for three months. Three years later, Peter's weight dropped uncontrollably by 8 kg over just a few weeks and an examination showed the cancer had metastasised to the liver. Peter is now informed by his doctor that they are looking into carrying out a new operation and/or initiating treatment with therapeutic antibodies.
