ACCT 350 SPRING 2022 PROJECT 2 BACKGROUND All the tenure track faculty do research. To me, thats 60% of the workload. In a nutshell, we propose a hypothesis: Does factor A causes effect B? Then, we gather the data either using experiments or archives, and build statistical models to test the hypothesis. In the end, we draw a conclusion based on the statistics generated by the models, which either support or reject the hypothesis. I studied under Dr. Keith Jones at KU. Our research focuses on financial reporting fraud we help the SEC catch the bad guys. In this project, we will read Keiths paper and learn the method to catch the bad guys, i.e. companies committed financial reporting fraud. REQUIREMENTS 1. We talked about the fraud triangle: incentive/pressure, opportunity, and rationale. Find one paper published on accounting journals (such as the Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and Journal of Accounting Research). Write down the title of the paper, the name of the authors, the journal name, and the published year. Discuss the findings. If applicable, please tell us what fraud triangle element the paper examines. (15 POINTS) Hint: Google Scholar is your friend. You can search accounting fraud and see what pops up. 2. Read Keiths paper (page 1136-1141, and 1149). Summarize the findings and the method they use to measure fraud risk. DO NOT COPY PASTE. (15 POINTS) 3. Open the Excel file. Use that method to catch the fraud companies. Write down their IDs and year. Explain the Excel steps that you took to derive those observations and why you think they are suspicious. Hint: There are five fraudsters in this sample. (20 POINTS) FORMAT Please use 12-point font, Times New Roman, single-line spacing, and default margin (one-inch each side). Start each question on a new page. Each question has a minimum limit of half page and a maximum limit of one page. Good luck!
