Acetic acid ( C H 3 C O O H ) is cracked to produce the intermediate ketene ( C H 2 C O (

Acetic acid (CH3COOH) is cracked to produce the intermediate ketene (CH2CO(g)) in a furnace.
CH3COOH(g)CH2CO(g)+H2O(g),l,HRO(298K)=132kJmol
The following side reaction also occurs to an appreciable extent.
CH3COOH(g)CH4(g)+CO2(g),2,HRo(298K)=-33.53kJmol
A conversion of acetic acid is 80% and a fractional yield of ketene is 0.0722. Yield is defined as the
mole of ketene formed / the maximum ketene would be obtained when all reactant completely consumed
without side reaction.
a. Complete mass balance calculation.
b. Calculate required furnace heating rate for a furnace feed of 100molh acetic acid by using Heat of
Reaction Method . The temperature of the feed is 300C and the temperature of the products is
700C.
Cp Data in JK,T in K
Acetic acid (CH3COOH(g))Cp=6.899+0.257T
Ketene (CH2CO(g))Cp=17.2+0.123T
Metan CH4(g),Cp=38.38-0.00736T
Water H2O(g),Cp=34-0.00965T
Carbondioxide CO2(g),Cp=19+0.0796T
