Acetic acid (CH3COOH) is chlorinated in a continuous reactor producing monochloroacetic
acid (CH2ClCOOH) in the following reaction:
CH3COOH + Cl2 CH2ClCOOH + HCl
Some of the product monochloroacetic is converted to dichloroacetic acid (CHCl2COOH) in
the undesired side reaction as follows:
CH2ClCOOH + Cl2 CHCl2COOH + HCl
The feed to the reactor contains 80 kmol/h acetic acid and 63.98 kmol/h of Cl2. The product
leaving the reactor contains 52.91 kmol/h monochloroacetic acid, 2.04 kmol/h dichloroacetic
acid, HCl, and some unreacted acetic acid and Cl2.
(a) Draw and completely label the process flowchart for this process.
[4 Marks]
(b) Using the extent of the reaction method, determine the flow rate of the HCl and
unreacted acetic acid and Cl2 leaving the reactor.
[20 Marks]
(c) Determine the conversion of acetic acid (%), and the yield (%) and selectivity of
monochloroacetic acid.
