Activity 1 Density calculations (4pts)

Open the PhET simulation Density and go to the tab Mystery.

https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/density/latest/density_en.html

On the right upper corner of the screen, select the Set 3 of objects. You want to determine the density of all five objects. For each object, you will measure its mass on the scale and find its volume using the technique of liquid diplacement.

On the screen, there is a tank with 100 L of water, when an object is completely submerged it will displace a volume of water equal to its proper volume. Notice that the units for density are kilograms per cubic meters (or grams per cubic centimeters), but in this simulation they are given in kilograms per liters.

1. Please complete the table below. (2pts)

Object Mass (kg) Volume (L) Density (kg/L) Material
3A
3B
3C
3D
3E

2. Which objects are floating, and why? (0.5pt) [Answer]

3. Grab the object 3B and place it below the water surface changing its location a few times. What do you notice? Why? (0.5pt) [Answer]

4. Include here below a screenshot of your simulation page with the object 3B in the water tank. (1pt)

Activity 2 Density comparisons (4pts)

Open the PhET simulation Density and go to the tab Compare.

1. On the right upper corner of the screen, select Blocks with Same Mass. The default mass is 5.00 kilograms, but instead move the cursor to 1.00 kilogram.

2. Which of the four objects is more dense? How do you know? [Answer]

3. Place all the objects into the water tank and check your prediction to question (2). Was your answer correct? How do you know? (0.5pt) [Answer]

4. Include a screenshot of your simulation page for point (3). (0.5pt) [Screenshot]

5. On the right upper corner of the screen, select Blocks with Same Volume. The default volume is 5.00 L, but instead move the cursor to 10.00L.

6. Without doing any calculation, and without placing the objects in the water tank, write here which object do you think will float the most and why. [Answer]

7. Check your answer above, by finding the density of the four objects. Complete the table below. (2pts).

Object Mass (kg) Volume (L) Density (kg/L)

8. Place the objects in the water tank. Was your answer correct? How do you know? (0.5pt) [Answer]

9. Include a screenshot of your simulation page for point (8).(0.5pt) [Screenshot]
